Creativity and narrative in photography

Nothing to book right now. Check back soon.

I remember when I was a child I wanted to learn photography in a photography school but I found the technical classes so tedious that I gave up soon after I started. It was very clear to me that I liked photography but that it was very complicated and boring to learn so many rules and so many techniques,

The rules, although you have to know them, are there to be broken.
Technique is learnt as you go on photographing.

Technique cannot be taught on the first days of class, nor can the rules. You have to teach (and learn) to enjoy the camera, to be creative, to see, to look, to create stories with your photos. (All this is my personal opinion)

Small cameras but big ideas

I have been teaching photography in Hong Kong for some time now and although I mostly teach street photography, my main focus has always been on creative photography.

  • To make a portrait different from what any other photographer would do, without much equipment in my backpack, just a camera and thousands of ideas.

  • To achieve through three images a sequence that makes the spectator think

  • To tell a story with more than 5 photographs

  • Photographing the unseen

What will I learn?

You will learn how to Develop your creativity and to tell stories with your photographs.

What is the course project?

You will develop a narrative series of 4-5 photographs that tell, through themselves and their relationship to each other, a narrative idea or concept.

Who is it intended for?

This course is aimed at photographers or creators of any level who wish to explore narrative or conceptual photography, and also want to build their own artistic universe through photographs that, as a whole, can tell stories.

Requirements

You will need basic knowledge of photography and photo retouching. A camera of any kind will be necessary; in addition, the use of some editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom is recommended, but not essential.

What is needed for the course?

A camera, a finger, an eye, a blank notebook and a pen, you can bring ideas if you want but I assure you that you will get a lot of good ideas as you do this course.

The course

Is made up of 7 lessons + Project Presentation day (10.5 Hours ), all of which focus on developing creativity and learning how to observe

(Not counting the time you will need to think, create and photograph at home).

Lesson 1: Let's introduce ourselves and compose with joy I (Theoretical class) 1,5 hour

Let's start in a fun and effective way, here we don't come to study but to photograph in a beautiful way.

  • Balance our images (Subject/object/subject)

  • Slow speeds

  • Division of the frame

Lesson 2: Lesson 1: Let's compose with joy II (Theoretical class) 1,5 hour

Have you ever thought about how to direct the gaze of those who see your photographs?

  • guide the viewer's gaze with three points of interest in your photography

  • triangles

Lesson 3: Geometry (Theoretical class) 1,5 hour

The presence of geometry represents the order of shapes, will stabilise the image and acts as a guide to the viewer of our images, Composing with geometry is advanced composing. Thinking about and finding geometry will make you much more creative. You will get much more powerful images

  • Divide the frame in a third

  • The square format

  • Vertical and horizontal lines

  • Natural frames

Lesson 4: Introduction to narrative photography (Theoretical class) 1,5 hour

Develop your creative voice
narrative photography has a very important conceptual weight in which the creative process is essential, from a sequence of photographs we can create a poetic story that tells a story, like a poem but with photographs instead of verses.

  • Diptychs

  • Triptychs

  • More than three photographs

Lesson 5: The portrait  (Theoretical class) 1,5 hour

Forget the typical photo with your friend, how would you photograph one person? And two?

  • Portraits with both natural and artificial light

  • Talking to the subject, getting to know him/her

  • Background, Ideas and objects

Lesson 6: Storytelling, narrative photography  (1,5 hrs)

Narrating through photography
Express an overall idea, which can be read.

  • The idea

  • The sketch

  • The environment

  • The elements

  • The light

  • The models

Lesson 7: Your project (Theoretical class) 1,5 hour

In this final project you will be able to develop a small narrative series of three or four (or more) photographs that explain, through themselves and their relationship with the others, a narrative idea or concept.

  • Anything, tangible or not, seen, unseen, existing or non-existing

Day 8: presentation of the projects

You came to the course with a lot of ideas and now you have two million more.

  • Exhibition of student projects

  • Constructive criticism and open discussion of the projects

The teacher can never lose contact with the student. NEVER
The course does not end once the project is handed in, we are ALWAYS in contact through Miguelitor´s website www.miguelitor.net
