Yesterday, in one of my online classes with 4 students from Hong Kong we had a very interesting talk, it started with a simple question and today hours after that talk I am still thinking about everything that was said. The death of street photography is coming very soon and we, the photographers, are to blame for it.
It all started with the simple and now usual question in all my online workshops: What is an interesting photo for you? This question subsequently leads to another one, what is an interesting photo for others? I'm not going to answer the questions because I want you to answer them.
I have been photographing the streets for a long time now and every day I know less and less, I don't know what the hell to photograph or how to do it, it all seems very repetitive to me. My photos and those of others. When I started 15 years ago to photograph any photo that I saw in the networks seemed new but with the passage of time and especially with the passage of the photographs I have seen during this time, everything seems the same, yes, again and again you see the same thing in social networks, in exhibitions, in books, in photo contest...... for the record that I put myself the first, my photos are very repetitive.
How many times do you see the same photo taken by different photographers?

We see these pictures every day hundreds of times, we do not advance dear colleagues, we repeat our work over and over again and what is worse, we repeat the work that already worked for others. We are not creative at all and that is to our detriment because seeing this is lazy and makes us run out of viewers, our photos overwhelm everyone who sees them. Sorry
We shoot to get likes and not to express ourselves, we do not dare to be original, we prefer what already worked for others and that makes us stagnate in what sooner or later is going to bore us, the art of observing the street should be that, an art and not a repetition and for the good of all we must photograph differently and seek new challenges, forms and photographs. So, how to photograph differently? I don't have the answer.
How many photos with a good decisive moment are you going to get in your life? How many with a coincidence? Do you go out on purpose to look for that moment/coincidence? Do you go out to photograph the same architectural structure that has given you so many likes in other publications? Are you one of those who like to give contrast to the temperature in all your photos? ....
For our sake we have to change the way we look, we are not going to rediscover photography but what we usually photograph has already been photographed at another time by others or by ourselves, I think we need to rethink more than photographing.
Study
I like chess very much, together with photography it is one of my daily hobbies/obligations, I am a big loser, I admit it, I don't like to lose but I lose and the answer is clear to me. I do NOT study. I play and I have a pattern of movements without looking if it has repercussions in the movements of the opponent, I play in case I happen to win but not because I am looking to win. In photography the same thing happens to me, I shoot in case I am lucky enough to get the photo of the year but I do not seek to learn beyond what I know. In both cases I lack the same thing, study and daring.
How to study to become a better photographer?
Surely we have felt inspired by some photograph we have seen, in fact you don't need to tell me if YOU HAVE BEEN ONE OF THOSE WHO HAVE PHOTOGRAPHED THE PASSING OF DEER WITH THE STRIPED SHIRT, it is very good to feel inspired, That will make us practice although that should not be the way in which we should study to get better images, studying has always been studying, at a desk, with a book, pen and notebook to write, I have given this notebook a name, because it is different from other notebooks, I call it a creative notebook. Writing down in the creative notebook your impressions about a photograph works and if you also write something more about what that photograph may lack to improve it, you will create a notebook of ideas and exercises to follow and support you instead of going out every day to photograph everything that moves.

Abbas is one of the photographers I like the most and many of his photographs inspire me and at the same time that I see them on the computer I take note of what I see and the impression that gives me what I'm seeing.

How would the photograph look with another person? Where would I place him? How can I make a photograph with three people so that they form a triangle? Could I get some contrast? Could I combine three people with any other object, animal or street scene? how far away should I photograph? how? would it be a repetitive picture? What if I also use a reflection? how? etc, etc....
This is a good way to study how to photograph and it will make us remember certain photographs and learn to read them, it is not a foolproof trick to make your photographs much more special but it will make you much more selective and creative than you were before when you went out to move the chess pieces without looking at the movement of the opponent.
Ni Puta idea qué fotografiar
Ayer, en una de mis clases online con 4 alumnos de Hong Kong tuvimos una charla de lo más interesante, empezó con una simple pregunta y hoy horas después de aquella charla sigo pensando en todo lo que se dijo. La muerte de la fotografía callejera llega muy pronto y la culpa de ello la tenemos nosotros, los fotógrafos.
Todo empezó con la simple y ya usual pregunta en todos mis talleres online. ¿Qué es para ti una foto interesante? Esta pregunta posteriormente llama a otra que es. ¿qué es una foto interesante para los demás?. No voy a contestar a las preguntas porque quiero que las contestes tú
Ya llevo tiempo fotografiando las calles y cada día sé menos, no sé qué narices fotografiar o cómo hacerlo, me parece todo muy repetitivo. Mis fotos y las de los demás. Cuando empecé hace 15 años a fotografiar cualquier foto que veía en las redes me parecía novedosa pero con el paso del tiempo y sobre todo, con el paso de las fotografías que he visto durante este tiempo, todo me parece lo mismo, sí, una y otra vez se ve lo mismo en las redes sociales, en las exposiciones, en los libros, en los photo contest...... conste que me pongo el primero, mis fotos son muy repetitivas.
¿Cuántas veces se ve la misma foto hecha por distintos fotógrafos?

Estas fotos las vemos todos los días cientos de veces, no avanzamos queridos compañeros, repetimos nuestro trabajo una y otra vez y lo que es peor, repetimos el trabajo que ya les funcionó a otros. No somos nada creativos y eso va en nuestro perjuicio ya que ver esto da pereza y hace que nos quedemos sin espectadores, nuestras fotos agobian a todos los que la ven. Lo siento
Disparamos para conseguir likes y no para expresarnos, no nos atrevemos a ser originales, preferimos lo que ya les funcionó a otros y eso hace que nos estanquemos en lo que tarde o temprano nos va a aburrir, el arte de observar la calle debe ser eso, un arte y no una repetición y por el bien de todos debemos fotografiar diferente y buscar nuevos retos, formas y fotografías. Entonces, ¿cómo fotografiar diferente? No tengo la respuesta.
¿Cuántas fotos con un buen momento decisivo vas a conseguir en tu vida? ¿cuántas con alguna coincidencia? ¿Sales a propósito a buscar ese momento/coincidencia? ¿sales a fotografiar la misma estructura arquitectónica que tantos likes te ha dado en otras publicaciones? ¿Eres de los que te gusta dar contraste a la temperatura en todas tus fotos?....Por nuestro bien tenemos que cambiar la forma de mirar, no vamos a redescubrir la fotografía pero lo que normalmente fotografiamos ya ha sido fotografiado en otro momento por otros o por nosotros mismos, creo que nos hace más falta recapacitar que fotografiar.
Estudiar
Me gusta mucho el ajedrez, junto con la fotografía es una de mis aficiones/obligaciones diarias, soy un gran perdedor, lo reconozco, no me gusta perder pero pierdo y la respuesta la tengo clara. NO estudio. Juego y tengo un patrón de movimientos sin mirar si repercute en los movimientos del contrario, juego por si da la casualidad de ganar pero no porque busque el ganar. En la fotografía me pasa lo mismo, disparo por si tengo suerte de conseguir de casualidad la foto del año pero no busco el aprender más allá de lo que sé. En ambos casos me falta lo mismo, estudiar y atrevimiento
¿Cómo estudiar para ser mejor fotógrafo?
Seguramente nos hayamos sentido inspirados por alguna fotografía que hayamos visto, de hecho no hace falta que me lo digas si TU HAS SIDO UNO DE LOS QUE HA FOTOGRAFIADO EL PASO DE CEBRAS CON LA CAMISETA DE RAYAS, Está muy bien el sentirnos inspirados, eso nos va a hacer practicar aunque no debe ser ése el modo en el que debamos estudiar para conseguir mejores imágenes, estudiar siempre ha sido estudiar, en un pupitre, con libro, bolígrafo y cuaderno para escribir, a este cuaderno yo le he puesto un nombre, porque sí, por que es distinto a otros cuadernos, lo llamo cuaderno creativo. Dejar por escrito en el cuaderno creativo tus impresiones acerca de una fotografía funciona y si además escribes algo más de lo que a la esa fotografía le puede faltar para mejorarla vas a crear un cuaderno de ideas y ejercicios que seguir y apoyarte en vez de salir día a día a fotografiar todo lo que se menea.
Ejemplo.
Abbas es uno de los fotógrafos que más me gusta y muchas de sus fotografías me sirven de inspiración y a la vez que las veo en el ordenador voy tomando nota de lo que veo y de la impresión que me da lo que estoy viendo.

¿Cómo quedaría la fotografía con otra persona? ¿dónde la situaría? ¿Cómo puedo hacer una fotografía con tres personas para que formen un triángulo? ¿Podría conseguir algún contraste? ,Podría combinar a tres personas con cualquier otro objeto, animal o escena en la calle? ¿a qué distancia debería fotografiar? ¿cómo? ,sería una foto repetitiva? ¿Y sí además utilizo algún reflejo? ¿cómo?...etc, etc...
Esto es una buena forma de estudiar como fotografiar además de que va a hacer que recordemos ciertas fotografías y que aprendamos a leer las mismas, no es un truco infalible para que tus fotografías sean mucho más especiales pero si que te va a hacer muchísimo más selectivo y creativo de lo que eras antes cuando salías a mover las fichas del ajedrez sin mirar el movimiento del contrario.
